I studied Fine Art at Sunderland Art School (1976-1979), concentrating on painting. I'm particularly interested in landscape, and especially drawn to seemingly empty places, where the elements are pared down to the essentials of land, sky, sea. A number of the paintings are of Spurn Point, one of my favourite locations. The monoprints are part of my work for a collaborative project (Dark River) about the river Don, with the poet Carolyn Waudby. I'm working on the prints in more of a relief printing style, applying ink with rollers, rather than painting directly onto the plate. Each one takes three or four impressions before it's complete. I like this method - although it has definite drawbacks - as it is less 'expressive' and I feel the result is 'cooler' (no the popular usage of 'cooler'.) The use of ink rollers can lead to 'accidental' effects that seem relevant to the subject, although mostly the accidents lead to the print being rejected. The prints on this site represent work in progress and may not be ones finally used in the project. Our blog for the project is at dkRiver. |
